Definition

Let n≥0n \ge 0 be an integer and let XX be a Hausdorff and second-countable topological space. An orbifold chart of dimension nn on an open set U⊆XU \subseteq X is a triple (U~,G,φ)(\tilde U, G, \varphi) with these parts. The set U~\tilde U is a connected open subset of ℝn\R^n. The group GG is finite and has a faithful action on U~\tilde U by diffeomorphisms. The map φ ⁣:U~→U\varphi \colon \tilde U \to U is continuous, and φ(gx)=φ(x)\varphi(g x) = \varphi(x) for all g∈Gg \in G and x∈U~x \in \tilde U. The induced map from the quotient space U~/G\tilde U / G to UU is a homeomorphism. An embedding of a chart (U~i,Gi,φi)(\tilde U_i, G_i, \varphi_i) into a chart (U~j,Gj,φj)(\tilde U_j, G_j, \varphi_j) is a smooth embedding ψ ⁣:U~i→U~j\psi \colon \tilde U_i \to \tilde U_j with φj∘ψ=φi\varphi_j \circ \psi = \varphi_i. An orbifold atlas of dimension nn on XX is a family of charts (U~i,Gi,φi)(\tilde U_i, G_i, \varphi_i) with these properties:

  1. The sets Ui=φi(U~i)U_i = \varphi_i(\tilde U_i) cover XX.
  2. For any two charts and any point x∈Ui∩Ujx \in U_i \cap U_j, there is a chart (U~k,Gk,φk)(\tilde U_k, G_k, \varphi_k) of the atlas with x∈Uk⊆Ui∩Ujx \in U_k \subseteq U_i \cap U_j.
  3. Whenever Ui⊆UjU_i \subseteq U_j, there is an embedding of the chart (U~i,Gi,φi)(\tilde U_i, G_i, \varphi_i) into the chart (U~j,Gj,φj)(\tilde U_j, G_j, \varphi_j).

An atlas 𝒱\mathcal V refines an atlas 𝒰\mathcal U if every chart of 𝒱\mathcal V has an embedding into some chart of 𝒰\mathcal U. Two atlases are equivalent if they have a common refinement. An nn-dimensional orbifold is a space XX as above together with an equivalence class of nn-dimensional orbifold atlases.

Remarks

An embedding ψ\psi of charts induces an injective group homomorphism f ⁣:Gi→Gjf \colon G_i \to G_j with ψ(gx)=f(g)ψ(x)\psi(g x) = f(g) \psi(x) for all g∈Gig \in G_i and x∈U~ix \in \tilde U_i. Let x=φ(x~)x = \varphi(\tilde x) for a chart (U~,G,φ)(\tilde U, G, \varphi). Up to isomorphism, the stabilizer of x~\tilde x in GG does not depend on the chart; it is the local group of xx. The point xx is singular when its local group is not trivial. Example: let m≥2m \ge 2 and let G=ℤ/mℤG = \Z / m\Z act on ℝ2\R^2 by rotations through multiples of 2π/m2\pi / m. The quotient X=ℝ2/GX = \R^2 / G is Hausdorff and second countable. The single chart (ℝ2,G,φ)(\R^2, G, \varphi), with the quotient map φ\varphi, is an atlas: clauses 2 and 3 only ask for the chart itself. So XX is an orbifold, the cone with one cone point of order mm. Non-example: let the group ℚ\Q act on ℝ\R by translations. Every orbit is dense, so the quotient ℝ/ℚ\R / \Q carries the trivial topology and is not Hausdorff; it is not an orbifold. A smooth manifold is an orbifold all of whose local groups are trivial.
