Proof

  1. Let pp be a prime number and let RR be a commutative ring of characteristic pp. So p⋅1=0p \cdot 1 = 0 in RR. Let x,y∈Rx, y \in R.
  2. By the binomial theorem, (x+y)p=∑k=0p(pk)xkyp−k(x + y)^p = \sum_{k=0}^{p} \binom{p}{k} x^k y^{p-k}.
  3. Fix an integer kk with 0<k<p0 < k < p. By the factorial formula, (pk)⋅k!⋅(p−k)!=p!\binom{p}{k} \cdot k! \cdot (p-k)! = p!.
  4. The prime pp divides p!p!. So pp divides the product (pk)⋅k!⋅(p−k)!\binom{p}{k} \cdot k! \cdot (p-k)!.
  5. The number k! (p−k)!k! \, (p-k)! is a product of integers from 11 to p−1p - 1. None of these factors is divisible by pp.
  6. So p∤k! (p−k)!p \nmid k! \, (p-k)!, by Euclid's lemma applied to one factor at a time.
  7. By Euclid's lemma and steps 4 and 6, pp divides the binomial coefficient (pk)\binom{p}{k}. Write (pk)=pt\binom{p}{k} = p t with an integer t≥1t \ge 1.
  8. Let z=xkyp−kz = x^k y^{p-k}. Then (pk)z=t⋅(p⋅z)\binom{p}{k} z = t \cdot (p \cdot z), a sum of tt copies of p⋅zp \cdot z.
  9. By the distributive law, p⋅z=(p⋅1)z=0⋅z=0p \cdot z = (p \cdot 1) z = 0 \cdot z = 0. So (pk)xkyp−k=0\binom{p}{k} x^k y^{p-k} = 0.
  10. Thus only the terms with k=0k = 0 and k=pk = p remain in step 2. Their coefficients are (p0)=(pp)=1\binom{p}{0} = \binom{p}{p} = 1.
  11. Hence (x+y)p=yp+xp=xp+yp(x + y)^p = y^p + x^p = x^p + y^p.

Idea

Expand with the binomial theorem. Every middle coefficient (pk)\binom{p}{k} is a multiple of pp, because pp appears in p!p! but not in k! (p−k)!k! \, (p-k)!. In characteristic pp, multiples of pp act as zero, so only xpx^p and ypy^p survive.
