Proof of transfinite induction from well-foundedness

Builds on Well-founded relationPredicateLaw of excluded middle

Proof

We argue by contradiction, using a minimal counterexample.

  1. Let RR be a well-founded relation on a set AA and let P(x)P(x) be a predicate on AA.
  2. Assume the hypothesis: for each x∈Ax \in A, if P(y)P(y) holds for each y∈Ay \in A with yRxy \mathrel{R} x, then P(x)P(x) holds.
  3. Let S={x∈A∣P(x) is false}S = \set{x \in A \mid P(x) \text{ is false}}. Suppose, for a contradiction, that SS is nonempty.
  4. Since RR is well-founded and SS is a nonempty subset of AA, there is m∈Sm \in S such that no s∈Ss \in S satisfies sRms \mathrel{R} m.
  5. Let y∈Ay \in A with yRmy \mathrel{R} m. By step 4, y∉Sy \notin S. By the definition of SS, P(y)P(y) is not false. By the law of excluded middle, P(y)P(y) holds.
  6. By step 5, P(y)P(y) holds for each y∈Ay \in A with yRmy \mathrel{R} m. By step 2 with x=mx = m, P(m)P(m) holds.
  7. But m∈Sm \in S by step 4, so P(m)P(m) is false. This contradicts step 6.
  8. Hence SS is empty. So for each x∈Ax \in A, P(x)P(x) is not false. By the law of excluded middle again, P(x)P(x) holds.

Idea

If PP failed somewhere, well-foundedness would give a minimal place where it fails. Below that place PP holds everywhere, so the hypothesis forces PP to hold there too. This contradiction shows that PP never fails.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
