Definition
Let and be the Pauli matrices and . Let be the Bell states of two qubits. Alice holds a qubit in a state , and Alice and Bob share two qubits and in the state . Quantum teleportation is the following LOCC protocol.
- Alice measures the pair in the Bell basis .
- Alice sends the outcome, two classical bits, to Bob.
- Bob applies to the correction , , or for the outcomes , , , respectively.
After step 3, the qubit is in the state , up to a global phase.
Remarks
The check rests on the identity which follows by expanding both sides in the standard basis. Each outcome has probability , and the correction undoes the Pauli factor, since and .
Non-example: if Bob applies no correction, then for the outcomes , , he holds , or , which in general differ from . Averaged over Alice's outcomes, his state is , independent of . This is the no-communication theorem at work: without the classical bits, Bob learns nothing.
At the end, the qubits and are in a Bell state that carries no information about , in agreement with the no-cloning theorem. The protocol works by linearity for mixed states and for a qubit that is entangled with other systems.
