Definition

Let L/KL/K be a finite extension of degree nn and let b1,…,bn∈Lb_1, \ldots, b_n \in L. Let TrL/K\mathrm{Tr}_{L/K} be the field trace. The discriminant of the family (b1,…,bn)(b_1, \ldots, b_n) is dL/K(b1,…,bn)=det⁡(TrL/K(bibj))1≤i,j≤n∈K,d_{L/K}(b_1, \ldots, b_n) = \det\left(\mathrm{Tr}_{L/K}(b_i b_j)\right)_{1 \le i, j \le n} \in K, where det⁡\det is the determinant. The discriminant of L/KL/K is the class of dL/K(b1,…,bn)d_{L/K}(b_1, \ldots, b_n) modulo (K×)2(K^\times)^2, for any basis b1,…,bnb_1, \ldots, b_n of LL over KK.

Remarks

If c1,…,cnc_1, \ldots, c_n is another basis and c=Pbc = Pb with P∈GLn(K)P \in GL_n(K), then d(c)=det⁡(P)2 d(b)d(c) = \det(P)^2\, d(b), so the class modulo squares is well defined. If L/KL/K is separable with embeddings σ1,…,σn\sigma_1, \ldots, \sigma_n into an algebraic closure, then d(b)=det⁡(σi(bj))2d(b) = \det\left(\sigma_i(b_j)\right)^2. The discriminant of a basis is nonzero if and only if L/KL/K is separable. If L=K(α)L = K(\alpha) and ff is the minimal polynomial of α\alpha, then d(1,α,…,αn−1)d(1, \alpha, \ldots, \alpha^{n-1}) is the discriminant of ff. For a number field LL over ℚ\Q, the discriminant of a ℤ\Z-basis of the ring of integers is an integer independent of the basis, the discriminant of the number field.

Example: L=ℚ(i)L = \Q(i), K=ℚK = \Q, basis 1,i1, i. Check: Tr(1)=2\mathrm{Tr}(1) = 2, Tr(i)=0\mathrm{Tr}(i) = 0 and Tr(i2)=−2\mathrm{Tr}(i^2) = -2, so d(1,i)=det⁡(200−2)=−4d(1, i) = \det\begin{pmatrix} 2 & 0 \\ 0 & -2 \end{pmatrix} = -4, the discriminant of x2+1x^2 + 1.

Non-example: for K=𝔽p(t)K = \F_p(t) and L=K(s)L = K(s) with sp=ts^p = t, every trace is 00, so the discriminant of every basis is 00; the extension is not separable.
