Definition

Let GG be a group. A left order on GG is a total order ≤\le on GG such that for all a,b,c∈Ga, b, c \in G, a≤b  ⟹  ca≤cb.a \le b \implies ca \le cb. The group GG is left-orderable if it has a left order.

Remarks

Every orderable group is left-orderable. Example: the Klein bottle group K=⟨a,b∣bab−1=a−1⟩K = \langle a, b \mid b a b^{-1} = a^{-1} \rangle is left-orderable but not orderable. Every element of KK is bnamb^n a^m for unique integers n,mn, m. Set bnam≤bn′am′b^n a^m \le b^{n'} a^{m'} when n<n′n < n', or n=n′n = n' and m≤m′m \le m'. Left multiplication by bb adds 11 to nn, and left multiplication by aa sends bnamb^n a^m to bnam+(−1)nb^n a^{m + (-1)^n}. Both keep this order, so it is a left order. In a two-sided order, a>ea > e would give a−1=bab−1>ea^{-1} = b a b^{-1} > e, which contradicts a>ea > e. The case a<ea < e is the same, so KK is not orderable. Non-example: a group with an element g≠eg \ne e of finite order nn is not left-orderable, since e<ge < g gives e<g<g2<⋯<gn=ee < g < g^2 < \cdots < g^n = e. If g<eg < e, the same argument applies to g−1g^{-1}. So a left-orderable group is a torsion-free group. Equivalently, GG is left-orderable if and only if it has a subsemigroup PP with G=P⊔{e}⊔P−1G = P \sqcup \set{e} \sqcup P^{-1}.
