Definition
Let be a field extension. The transcendence degree of , written , is the cardinality of a transcendence basis of .
Remarks
The definition makes sense because a transcendence basis exists and any two transcendence bases have the same cardinality; the proof uses an exchange argument like the Steinitz exchange lemma. Example: , with transcendence basis . Example: is the cardinality of the continuum, since is uncountable and the algebraic closure of a countable field is countable. Non-example: for , the transcendence degree over is , not , because is dependent and is a transcendence basis. It is additive in towers: for . The transcendence degree is if and only if the extension is algebraic.
