Definition

Let FF be a field, let m≥1m \ge 1 be an integer invertible in FF, and let FsF^s be a separable closure of FF. Let μm⊆Fs\mu_m \subseteq F^s be the group of mm-th roots of unity, and for n≥0n \ge 0 let μm⊗n\mu_m^{\otimes n} be its nn-fold tensor power over ℤ\Z, with μm⊗0=ℤ/mℤ\mu_m^{\otimes 0} = \Z/m\Z. Write Hn(F,M)H^n(F, M) for the Galois cohomology of Gal⁡(Fs/F)\Gal(F^s/F) with coefficients in MM. Let δ ⁣:F×→H1(F,μm)\delta \colon F^\times \to H^1(F, \mu_m) be the connecting map of the Kummer sequence 1→μm→(Fs)×→x↦xm(Fs)×→11 \to \mu_m \to (F^s)^\times \xrightarrow{x \mapsto x^m} (F^s)^\times \to 1, as in Kummer theory. The Galois symbol in degree nn is the homomorphism hF,mn ⁣:KnM(F)/m→Hn(F,μm⊗n),{a1,…,an}↦δ(a1)∪⋯∪δ(an),h_{F, m}^n \colon K_n^M(F)/m \to H^n(F, \mu_m^{\otimes n}), \qquad \set{a_1, \ldots, a_n} \mapsto \delta(a_1) \cup \cdots \cup \delta(a_n), from Milnor K-theory modulo mm, where ∪\cup is the cup product.

Remarks

The map is well defined: the cup product is multilinear, the target is killed by mm, and Tate showed that δ(a)∪δ(1−a)=0\delta(a) \cup \delta(1 - a) = 0 for a≠0,1a \ne 0, 1. Concretely, for σ∈Gal⁡(Fs/F)\sigma \in \Gal(F^s/F) and αm=a\alpha^m = a, the class δ(a)\delta(a) is represented by the cocycle σ↦σ(α)/α\sigma \mapsto \sigma(\alpha)/\alpha.

Example: in degree 11, hF,m1 ⁣:F×/(F×)m→H1(F,μm)h^1_{F, m} \colon F^\times / (F^\times)^m \to H^1(F, \mu_m) is an isomorphism, by Kummer theory and Hilbert's Theorem 90. Example: F=ℝF = \R and m=2m = 2. Then H∗(ℝ,ℤ/2ℤ)H^*(\R, \Z/2\Z) is a polynomial ring 𝔽2[x]\F_2[x] with x=δ(−1)x = \delta(-1), so hℝ,2n({−1,…,−1})=xn≠0h^n_{\R, 2}(\set{-1, \ldots, -1}) = x^n \ne 0.

Non-example: let FF have characteristic p>0p > 0 and let m=pm = p. Then the map x↦xpx \mapsto x^p is injective on (Fs)×(F^s)^\times, and μp\mu_p is trivial. So the Kummer sequence is not exact on the right in general, and the construction does not apply. This is why mm must be invertible in FF.
